There are mixed reviews for Jennifer’s Body flowing in, but either way I’m still dying to see this one! It seems everyone seems to be saying it works better as a comedy than a horror film, but it’s not being marketed that way. I really wish people would see is it’s meant to be both. The horror-only marketing is something that seems done by the company (which is why Diablo Cody released a red band trailer which is much lighter and showcasing the humor) I always felt it seems more of that witty dark humor from classic horror films I loved. But it’s obviously open for interpretation.

But again, this film feels more like a comedy than it does a contemporary horror movie, and I’m sure those who might end up liking Jennifer’s Body, will appreciate the humor over the scares/gore.

Presumably, Kusama wants to underscore that this is more a comedy than a scare-a-thon. Pity she didn’t trust her audience to discover this on their own, though. All that is really needed are lines like Needy’s, when trying to explain Jennifer’s transformation to Chip, “She’s really evil, not high-school evil!”
The film doesn’t lack for energy. It moves along briskly, and Kusama and Cody (who serves as executive producer) achieve several striking visual images involving blood, shadows and gloomy places. The film is technically smooth, too, so Jennifer’s Body is not a total miss. Just a stinging disappointment for Cody fans.

Despite its selling points, however, Jennifer’s Body can’t help but feel unsatisfying. Part of the problem comes from the filmmakers’ noticeable superiority to the genre they’re working in. Jennifer’s murderous acts lack tension and are shot rather perfunctorily, as if Kusama is contemptuous of horror movie conventions but is unsure how best to parody them. And while Fox certainly has the physical attributes required to be every young man’s object of desire, she doesn’t have the truly witchy demeanour needed to make Jennifer despicably arrogant about her looks. The rest of the cast do their best with equally underdeveloped roles, but Adam Brody shows real comic flair as the local band’s cocksure frontman.
